The laser level, chosen on figures.
Cross-line and 360° multi-line laser levels, and distance meters up to 120 m. Every instrument is published with its accuracy in millimetres, its range and its laser class.

How to choose a laser level
Three figures settle it: accuracy in millimetres at ten metres, usable range with a detector, and the number of planes thrown. The rest is convenience.

1
Accuracy, in millimetres at 10 metres
It is the largest stated gap between the line thrown and the true horizontal, measured at ten metres. The smaller the figure, the more accurate the instrument.

2
Usable range, with a detector
To the naked eye a class 2 laser shows up over only a few metres. The detector picks the beam up electronically and multiplies that distance. Outdoors, it is what decides.

3
The number of planes thrown
Three planes are enough for partitions and tiling. The fourth is for aligning and marking out a ceiling without moving the instrument. It changes nothing about accuracy.
