Outdoors, daylight wipes the line out after a few metres. The stated range without a detector holds only indoors: as soon as you step outside, the detector alone gives the real range.

Two families answer that need. Line lasers with a compatible detector, for middling distances; the rotary laser, which concentrates its energy into a spinning point and reaches far further, for groundwork and large setting out.
