Use

Four complete 360° planes: two horizontal and two crossed vertical. The second horizontal plane is what sets this model apart from the twelve-line one — it lets you mark out a ceiling without moving the instrument or changing its height.

It is the layout for jobs where floor and ceiling are dealt with in the same session: suspended ceilings, stud tracks, setting out downlights. The number of planes changes nothing about accuracy; it changes the number of trips back and forth.

Frequent questions about this model

What is the difference from the 12-line model?

The 16-line throws four complete 360° planes instead of three: one more horizontal, higher up. That second plane lets you mark out a suspended ceiling and keep the low horizontal for floor dimensions, without moving the instrument. Accuracy, range and runtime are identical on both models.

What accuracy should I expect?

The maker states ±1.5 mm at 5 metres. A laser’s accuracy scales with distance, so reckon on about ±3 mm at ten metres and ±6 mm at twenty. It is a laboratory figure taken on a steady mounting; on a floor that moves the instrument re-levels but the line trembles.

Can it be used outdoors?

Yes, but not to the naked eye. In daylight the green line disappears after a few metres, however strong it is. You then need the detector, offered in the box: the maker states 20 metres to the naked eye and up to 50 metres with it, the instrument switching to pulse mode.

Can the planes I do not need be switched off?

Yes. The planes switch on and off separately, on the instrument or with the remote supplied. That leaves only the line you need, which stops you picking the wrong mark on a busy wall and spares the battery: the fewer planes lit, the longer it lasts over a working day.

What is in the basic box?

The instrument, its magnetic mount, the battery, the remote, the charger and a carrying pouch. The 1.50-metre tripod and the 50-metre detector are not there as standard: they are two options ticked in the “Build your box” block, and it stays one order and one parcel.

How long does the battery last?

The maker states about six hours with a 4,000 mAh lithium battery, without saying how many planes are lit during that time. That is a caveat worth knowing: on this kind of instrument runtime falls as you switch more planes on. We publish its figure as it stands and have asked for the detail.
